SHELTER MEDICINE FOUNDATIONS
This course is envisioned as a practical, veterinarian-led two-day course for the people who do not have a veterinarian on-staff every day that are caring for animals before, after, and between veterinary visits. This is NOT a course on practicing veterinary medicine. Participants will not be taught to independently diagnose, prescribe or replace veterinary care. Instead, they will learn how to become more capable partners to the veterinarian and how to function responsibly within veterinarian approved protocols, applicable law and organizational policy.
Course topics to include:
Shelter medicine foundations, Intake assessments, body conditioning scoring, microchip scanning, animal restraint for vet care, rabies identification and protocol, common parasites and GI diseases, vaccination fundamentals, infection prevention, venipuncture fundamentals, first response and emergency stabilization, animal CPR, record documentation.
